Capcom has set a very high sales target for Street Fighter 6, with the company aiming to sell 10 million copies of the game
Of course, Street Fighter 6 will be one of the most anticipated projects in the gaming industry, and Capcom's confidence in its success is undeniable. The transparent development cycle and huge interest from both newcomers and veterans of the series ensure its place in history. However, the question of whether selling 10 million copies will be successful enough remains open.
Haruhiro Tsujimoto confirmed that the developers are not hesitant to invest in Street Fighter 6, and that big investments mean big expectations. He also expressed confidence that if Capcom can leverage its experience in the digital space, it should be able to sell 10 million copies of the new fighter.
Street Fighter 5 has sold 7 million copies in the last seven years, which is a significant achievement for fighting games. It has become the best-selling game on home consoles at present. However, its main competitor Tekken 7 reached the milestone of 10 million copies only in December 2022, which was more than five years after its release. While Tsujimoto refers to games like Monster Hunter and Resident Evil, which have sold as many copies, I think they have broader appeal than fighters.
Although Tsujimoto did not specify the period in which he wants to achieve his grand goal, it is assumed to be the sales target for all time, not just the first year or two. However, enticing prizes, such as the $1 million grand prize at the Capcom Pro Tour, can help boost sales. Developers have clearly worked hard to make the game accessible to players of all skill levels. The goal is quite ambitious, but I think Capcom has a good chance of achieving it. I am eagerly looking forward to fighting games becoming a more stable part of the gaming library on PC and beyond.
