The remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is still in development at Saber Interactive
The game, announced as a joint project between Aspyr Media and partners Lucasfilm Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, was presented as a timed exclusive for PS5 at the PlayStation Showcase event in September 2021 but has reportedly faced issues over the past few years.
Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier wrote on the ResetEra forum, stating that sources told him the game has not been abandoned yet, even though its current status remains unclear.
"'Is it alive?' and 'Will it ever actually come out?' are two very different questions," noted Schreier. "If it does come out, what will it look like? I've spoken to two employees from Saber, and they both claim they're still actively working on it, so the comments suggesting the game isn't being developed 'in any way' right now don't seem accurate."
Later, Schreier clarified on X (previously known as Twitter), saying, "I can't say if the KoTOR Remake will ever actually come out, but yes, two people from Saber Interactive have confirmed they're still working on it, despite recent rumors that no one is working on the game (Saber took over the project from Aspyr last year, as reported by Bloomberg)."
Schreier's information follows statements from Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb, suggesting no one is working on the game.
In a recent episode of Game Mess Mornings, Grubb stated, "It seems deader than dead because this game seems unable to happen without a partner like Sony, which is out, and because Lucasfilm no longer wants to spend money on games.
"They find partners for development, and then those partners figure out self-funding or seek their own partners."
Last summer, Bloomberg claimed that Aspyr had stopped working on the game, casting doubt on its future.
Embracer had earlier confirmed that Saber Interactive was also working on the game, and some Bloomberg sources believed Saber might have taken over the entire development of the project.
