The entire Mortal Kombat game series features over a hundred unique characters, but when it comes to film adaptations, there are usually about 10 main characters who, one way or another, get the most screen time—and every fan knows their names.

However, 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot took a different approach by introducing a new, original character who had never appeared in any of the previous games—Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan. Cole is an MMA fighter with a dragon tattoo on his chest, and—without realizing it—he is a descendant of one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters, Scorpion, thanks to his daughter, who was raised in the Raiden’s Temple.

Lewis Tan will reprise his role in the upcoming Mortal Kombat II, set to premiere next month, and during the recent interview with ComicBook, game series creator and creative director of NetherRealm Studios Ed Boon revealed that Cole Young was almost included in Mortal Kombat 1 video game as a Kameo fighter, but at the end studio decided against the idea because she had started working on a new game. The full quote of Boon you can check out below:

"We ran out of time and had to start the next game"

This is not the first time we hear that NetherRealm Studios is working on the new game, as earlier this month the studio hired testers for the upcoming project, which is already at an advanced stage of development. The only question is whether it’s a new Mortal Kombat title, Injustice, or a brand-new IP.

During the same interview with ComicBook, Karl Urban, who plays Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat II, confirmed that during filming, he did the splits to perform the character’s legendary Nut Punch, and the 53-year-old actor did not sustain any injuries.

“This is a lot of things going on here, pal, but I, I will say I was not injured. Almost injured. Yeah okay I did I did do the splits”

We also know that Mortal Kombat III is officially happening, with the script possibly being finished by screenwriter Jeremy Slater. According to GeekTyrant, the upcoming third installment may adapt the events of the Mortal Kombat 3 video game, where Shao Kahn is manipulating events and resurrects Queen Sindel to invade Earthrealm and unite it with Outworld. As a result, there are no tournaments like in the upcoming Mortal Kombat II—instead, pure chaos and countless fights.

Besides Karl Urban (Johnny Cage) and Lewis Tan (Cole Young), the cast of Mortal Kombat II includes Ludi Lin (Lui Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Joe Taslim (Bi-Han/Noob Saibot), Hiroyuki Sanada (Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion), Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Tati Gabrielle (Jade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Martyn Ford (Shao Kahn), Tadanobu Asano (Lord Raider), CJ Bloomfield (Baraka), and more. Mortal Kombat II is directed by Simon McQuoid.
