Next month, IO Interactive releases their new project—007 First Light, a new story about iconic movie character James Bond, but it will have nothing in common with the films and will tell the story of the character’s origins and how he eventually became the man we know as Agent 007.

Since the game is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on May 27 (with the Nintendo Switch 2 version coming out a little later), the first reviews from gaming media have started to appear. And it looks like IO Interactive has managed to create a very high-quality product. For instance, according to Gamespot, 007 First Light “could be 2026's GOTY and the best Bond game ever,” as it is "shaping up to be a phenomenal IO Interactive game". CGM revealed that "IO Interactive might be the perfect Bond studio" and Metro stated, "007 First Light passes the James Bond authenticity test".

It is claimed that 007 First Light combines elements from both older and newer Hitman games, featuring a variety of wide-linear missions in the style of games that offer players a wealth of options. As you move through the locations, you’ll transition from linear sections to sandbox areas and back again. As a result, the game offers multiple ways to play through it.

Special attention has been paid to the combat system. The young Bond has a whole arsenal of gadgets at his disposal. For example, the so-called Q Lens allows him to see through walls and hack gadgets. You can also use a laser to detonate explosive objects or, for example, cut ropes. As for encounters with enemies, in addition to punching, blocking, and dodging, Bond can grab nearby objects and use them to strike enemies. Speaking of enemies—they’re pretty aggressive, and you should expect them to swarm the protagonist. That said, the combat system is fluid and slightly reminiscent of Batman: Arkham series—it was these games, along with Uncharted, that inspired the developers when creating the combat system and action sequences. 007 First Light will also feature boss battles, and one of them is described as "the James Bond version of the often-lauded Mr. Freeze fight". In short, the game's action sequences are described as “movie-like explosive action and set pieces” combined with improvised problem-solving “that is true to 007”.

Gaming publications have also shared some details about the missions in 007 First Light. It is reported that the game’s first mission sends Bond to Iceland, where he was serving in the Royal Navy, after which he decides to join MI6. Another mission shows James Bond running across rooftops to reach his apartment, which has been infiltrated by assassins.

Other gameplay details reveal that in 007 First Light, Bond has a skill called Bluff. We see him knock out one of the guards, but another guard notices. Using the Bluff skill, Bond tells the guard that he’s feeling sick, and then the guard collapses as well. We’ll also be able to eavesdrop on NPCs to gather new information; for example, Bond can overhear a story about a journalist and then impersonate that journalist to get past security.

So far, 007 First Light sounds like a really promising product, and hopefully the developers at IO Interactive will manage to create a high-quality game without losing face. Recently, the studio also revealed the title sequence of 007 First Light, featuring Lana Del Rey, similar to James Bond movies.
