The CEO of Epic Games has unveiled a new concept called Team Open, a proposal that envisions greater cooperation between major gaming platforms - including Valve's Steam - to make some of the world's biggest games more accessible to players.

According to Sweeney, Steam users are currently missing access to several of the industry's most popular live-service titles, including Fortnite, League of Legends, and Genshin Impact. His Team Open proposal aims to bridge that gap by encouraging collaboration rather than competition between digital storefronts.

The idea is relatively simple but potentially transformative. Instead of requiring players to install separate launchers and create accounts across multiple ecosystems, Team Open would allow major games to become available through Steam while developers and publishers continue operating their own services behind the scenes. In theory, Steam users could launch titles like Fortnite directly from their existing game library without leaving Valve's platform.

For Epic Games, the proposal could dramatically expand the reach of Fortnite and its broader ecosystem. Steam remains the largest PC gaming platform in the world, with millions of daily active users and an enormous global audience. Bringing Fortnite to Steam would expose the game to players who have chosen not to install the Epic Games Store or simply prefer managing their games through Valve's launcher.

The concept extends beyond Fortnite. Sweeney also referenced League of Legends and Genshin Impact - two of the biggest free-to-play games globally that currently operate through their own dedicated launchers. If companies such as Riot Games and HoYoverse embraced a similar philosophy, PC players could theoretically access many of their favorite titles from a single platform while still preserving each publisher's account systems, updates, and monetization.

Sweeney argues that this approach would ultimately benefit everyone involved. Players would enjoy a more convenient gaming experience without juggling multiple launchers, while publishers could reach a significantly larger audience without giving up control over their live-service infrastructure.

The proposal also reflects a broader discussion about openness within the gaming industry. For years, digital storefronts have competed aggressively to secure exclusive releases, encouraging players to maintain several different launchers depending on which games they want to play. While competition has helped drive innovation, it has also fragmented the PC gaming ecosystem, creating additional friction for users.

Implementing such cooperation would require agreement between companies that have often competed directly for users, revenue, and developer support. Epic Games and Valve have disagreed on digital storefront policies in the past, making any large-scale partnership far from guaranteed.

There are also business considerations. Companies operating their own launchers maintain greater control over customer relationships, payment systems, updates, and platform revenue. Making games available through Steam could require negotiations over revenue sharing, technical integration, and account management, all of which present significant challenges.

Even so, many players have responded positively to the concept. A unified experience where major games are available through one library has long been requested by portions of the PC gaming community. Reducing launcher fragmentation could simplify installations, updates, and game management while making the overall experience more convenient.

At the same time, publishers would likely weigh the benefits of increased visibility against the potential loss of direct traffic to their own platforms. For companies with hundreds of millions of registered users, maintaining an independent ecosystem remains strategically valuable.
