Sony, 2028'den itibaren disk tabanlı oyunların piyasaya sürülmesini durduracağını duyurdu; oyuncular bu duruma tepki gösterdi.
Following Rockstar Games' announcement that its upcoming title, GTA 6, will not be released on physical discs and will be available only in digital format, Sony made a similar announcement, stating that the company will stop releasing all new video games on discs starting in 2028.
The statement was published on a separate blog on the PlayStation website, and it is claimed that this move is in response to consumer preferences for digital games. You can check out the full statement from company representatives below:
“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.
This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.
We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.”
Despite the company’s claim that more and more gamers prefer digital versions of video games over physical ones, a lot of gamers were extremely unhappy with Sony’s announcement. In their view, this contributes to a lack of ownership, since the publisher can recall the license at any time. Furthermore, many fans enjoy collecting physical discs, and PlayStation is essentially taking away that option. Gaming journalists have also criticized Sony’s decision, citing inevitable price monopolization in the future and a potential loss of audience.
Furthermore, Game File reports that today’s announcement from Sony may also be related to the PlayStation 6 —specifically, that the console will launch at least as late as 2028 and will almost certainly feature an all-digital format for purchasing video games. However, previous rumors from insiders have suggested that the launch of the next-generation console is still scheduled for the 2027 holiday season. In other news, Sony has also confirmed that the company is shutting down the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, as stated in a separate blog post.
