Fallout: New California, Bethesda'nın Fallout oyunları beklerken GOG'da satışa sunuldu.
Bethesda has a lot of Fallout coming and none of it is playable. The thing that became playable this week is a mod. Fallout: New California, a full conversion for Fallout: New Vegas that has existed in some form for well over a decade, released on GOG, where it now installs and launches like any other game in a library.
The distribution change is the news. Until now, playing it meant pulling the files from Moddb along with roughly half a dozen recommended mods, then managing the install and load order yourself, which is the point where most people quietly close the tab. On GOG it sits behind one button, free, provided you own Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition. To me, a mod moving from a forum download to a storefront installer changes who actually plays it more than any trailer does.
What you get is a prequel to the Interplay era. New California takes place in 2260, before Fallout 2, and casts you as the kid from Vault 18, an orphan, a loner and a mutant. A decision made on the last big night of the Vault Ball season sets the rest of it moving, eventually reaching the future of the New California Republic itself. The faction list is dense for a mod: the NCR under president Wendell Peterson, the New Reno Mob's Bishop family, the remnant Shi clans, the Enclave's Leonidas Squadron, a Super Mutant Army, and a Raider Alliance dug into the Athens-Tec uranium mine off the Long I-15.
It has been in development long enough to have a second name. The project began as Project Brazil and had already been going for roughly seven years by 2018, which is when PC Gamer put a verdict on it that has followed it since.
"the best Fallout game you'll play this year"
— PC Gamer, 2018
The same piece called it a remarkable achievement and one of the most confident, professional mods its writer had played. That was eight years ago, and the official pipeline has produced no new single-player Fallout in the interval.
It is not for lack of announcements. On 17 July, Bethesda published a note confirming that Fallout 5 is in pre-production on Creation Engine 3, the shared technology platform the studio has been building since Starfield, and that remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in development with no dates attached. A Fallout 76 expansion called Raven Rock arrives in 2027 as a prequel to Fallout 3. Starfield keeps getting updates. The Elder Scrolls Online was promised more in future. Fallout 4 has passed 35 million copies more than a decade after release, and Fallout Shelter has passed 250 million players. A third season of the Amazon show is on the way as well, which matters because Howard had previously teased that Fallout 5 would connect to it, a plan that reads differently now that a different studio is making the next game in the series.
The timing of that note is the part worth holding onto. It landed less than two weeks after Xbox layoffs that will put 3,200 people out of work, and the line about bringing teams closer together reads as consolidation of studios that took heavy cuts, with ZeniMax Online now partnering with Bethesda Game Studios on The Elder Scrolls while continuing to run ESO. A union claimed Bethesda developers were terminated on the same day Xbox announced new Fallout games, after being told their jobs ran to September. The announcement was structured to reassure, and the layoffs went unmentioned.

Underneath the list is a more interesting question than what is being made, which is who was allowed to make it. Obsidian's new Fallout is now official, led by Josh Sawyer, the lead designer on New Vegas. Bloomberg confirmed it on 8 July, with reporting that the studio cancelled Avowed 2 and paused other work to clear the way. Windows Central's Jez Corden reported the studio had been building toward it for as long as two years while waiting on Bethesda's green light, originally in Unreal Engine 5 rather than Creation Engine, with debate at Xbox Game Studios level over which engine it should use. Corden later clarified that the earlier project was not officially Fallout, only very Fallout-shaped, and Jason Schreier described Sawyer's most recent effort as a project codenamed Michigan that was neither Fallout nor a prototype meant to become Fallout, now scrapped in favour of the real thing.
The reason it took this long has a name attached to it. Chris Avellone, who worked on New Vegas, says Obsidian pitched a new Fallout repeatedly and got nowhere.
"Bethesda put the kibosh on that a while ago"

By his account, the project had to shift its direction and tone away from Fallout toward something merely similar, which lines up with Corden's version, where the collaboration was not possible earlier in part because Todd Howard wanted to be personally involved in any formal Obsidian and Bethesda team-up, and could not be while the TV show, The Elder Scrolls 6, and Starfield were all running. I think that sequence is the actual story in Bethesda's July note, because a studio spending two years building an unofficial version of a game it was not permitted to make is a stranger fact than any release date.
Howard, for his part, denied Bethesda-Obsidian conflict when it came up, describing a large amount of mutual respect behind the scenes and a long-running search for a window where working together made sense. In a separate conversation with Schreier, his first interview with the Bloomberg reporter in 15 years, the 55-year-old said he had at one point thought about what retirement would look like and no longer does.

The remasters remain the vaguest items on the board. Jeff Gerstmann said on his show that he has seen footage of a Fallout 3 remake and that considerable work has gone into it, while being open about not knowing whether it survived.
"I have seen footage of a Fallout 3 remake, so someone somewhere made something"
— Jeff Gerstmann
Corden has previously put the Fallout 3 remake at 2027, and Howard has said he wants to keep using the shadow-drop approach that worked for Oblivion Remastered, which was announced and released on the same day in April 2025. NateTheHate has separately said an enhanced Fallout: New Vegas is in development. None of those three projects has a confirmed date, a confirmed platform list, or in the remasters' case a confirmed existence beyond Bethesda's one sentence.
So the state of Fallout in July 2026 is a company with six things in flight and nothing to hand over, and a mod team that finished its game years ago and just made it easier to install. Everything on Bethesda's list needs years and, in the remasters' case at least, hardware I do not currently own. New California runs on a 2010 engine, costs nothing on top of a game that goes on sale constantly, and is sitting on a storefront right now. For anyone waiting out the gap between the announcements and the releases, that is the whole pitch.
