Bulkhead has started restricting regions in WARDOGS. On October 21, the developers announced that within a few hours they would lower the maximum server ping to 175 ms, and that they’re also working on full region locking. The studio wants to protect the majority of players from an influx of users from regions where, according to the developers, cheating is more common.

According to Bulkhead, region locking is already being rolled out, but it will take more time for the restriction to have a noticeable effect. The studio also admitted that it’s disappointing to introduce these divisions, since social interaction is one of WARDOGS’ core ideas. Still, the developers decided that the interests of the largest group of players outweigh those of the minority, so the maximum ping will now be just 175 ms.

Bulkhead also apologized to players for letting things get to this point. The developers explained that they first wanted to give all regions the chance to play together, but that approach didn’t work, so the studio will now be stricter about mixing players from different regions.

Bulkhead doesn’t name a specific region in its statement. However, players have been complaining on the Steam forums for weeks about large numbers of cheaters from China on European servers. Some users claimed these players not only use cheats but also troll others and disrupt play at spawn points. That’s why players directly urged the developers to cap ping and introduce region locking, as some other games have done. Bulkhead’s decision has split the community. Many players back the developers and think this should have been done long ago. Some have already reported seeing far fewer cheaters on servers since the restriction went live.

Others doubt it will solve the problem. In their view, some players from China have under 175 ms ping to European servers, and the restriction itself can be bypassed with a VPN or proxy. Some players suggest giving China entirely separate servers instead. Another complaint is that the restriction will hit honest players who play with friends from other regions, as well as players from less popular regions where servers are already sparsely populated. On top of that, part of the community stresses that without solid anti-cheat, a ping cap won’t fix the problem in the long run.

As a reminder, the studio recently admitted that it made Season 2 progression too fast and is now considering launching Season 3 earlier than planned.
