Chris Avellone ve Asmongold, BioWare'in Kapanmasına Tepki Gösterdi - Suçu Yönetime ve Politikalarına Yüklediler
When a game studio closes, it often becomes a topic of discussion in the gaming community. When a major division like BioWare shuts down, as happened this week, it becomes one of the most talked-about events of the year. It also brings a fresh round of blame and questions about why once-beloved series have become almost unrecognizable.
Gamers have been arguing about it nonstop, and people from the industry have joined in, including Chris Avellone, a former Obsidian writer. He was prompted by a 2024 tweet in which he described an experience with a BioWare producer that, according to him, showed “the full extent of their hiring practices.” He didn’t tell the whole story then, but he has now shared the details. Replying to a user on X, Avellone claimed one BioWare producer would look at candidates’ LinkedIn profiles, and if the posts they had liked didn’t match the producer’s political or social views, the producer would oppose hiring them, even if they were talented and experienced. You can check out his full statement below:
“When applicants would apply to the studio, the producer would go through their LinkedIn to see what posts they liked, and if he disagreed with their political/social Like, he'd advocate not to hire them based on their Like.
Now, there’s times where that’s appropriate (you don’t want to hire someone who favors not working in teams, or hates game development, or is using your studio as a stepping stone to another), but in this case, it didn’t feel appropriate.
Not approving someone because of lack of skill or experience, sure – but I don’t expect everyone to have the same political viewpoint as I do, nor do they have to have the same viewpoint to work well together on a game.”
Well-known YouTuber Asmongold also weighed in. He criticized game journalists, including Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, accusing them of giving Dragon Age: The Veilguard high ratings while ignoring its obvious flaws, even as players tore the game apart. He also criticized developers who, in his view, don’t care about games and only promote their own ideology. Furthermore, he compared the closure of BioWare to amputating an infected limb that should have been removed long ago, because the studio had stopped being what people were used to.
Asmongold says gaming journalists who rated Dragon Age: The Veilguard highly are responsible for BioWare shutting down
"I place a unique accountability on every single gaming journalist that rated Dragon Age: The Veilguard highly.. I actually think these people are responsible for these studios shutting down."
The future of Mass Effect and Dragon Age is uncertain, and new games in these series may never come out. According to former BioWare producer Mark Darrah, EA may sell the rights to other developers, though he thinks time will show is it actually possible. As is known, Electronic Arts was working on Mass Effect 5, which had to be canceled because of BioWare’s closure. The debut trailer for the game, titled Universe, has leaked, and even that first pre-rendered footage showed it was a highly ambitious project.
