ZA/UM described the project as an attempt at “the most faithful representation of desktop role-playing ever attempted in video games,” emphasizing player agency over scripted paths. The Final Cut edition expanded the original release with additional quests, new locations, added characters, and full voice acting across the entire script. These updates reframed the experience without altering its core systems or tone.

Polygon ranked Disco Elysium at No. 24 on its list of the best games of 2019 and praised its design for allowing failure to function as progress rather than punishment. The publication highlighted how the game’s systems reinforce role-play instead of blocking it.
