Despite the huge popularity of The Last of Us game series, developed by Naughty Dog, the studio had to cancel The Last of Us Online, also known as Factions—a multiplayer expansion to the franchise, which was in development for 7 years. It was initially an online multiplayer mode for the original game, which later evolved into a standalone AAA title intended to be a service-based game, similar to Bungie’s Destiny.

Earlier this month, the game director of The Last of Us Online, Vinit Agarwal, shared some exciting and, at the same time, disappointing updates about the game. He mentioned that it was about 80% complete in terms of content and technical parts, but more importantly, Naughty Dog decided to cancel the title 24 hours before the official reveal. According to Agarwal, this decision was a “devastating and soul-crushing moment.”

We can only speculate about what The Last of Us Online might have been like, but according to Agarwal himself, it was the best multiplayer game he and his colleagues had ever played, as he wrote in his latest post on the X social media.

“It’s wild how many of my ex-colleagues still message me today saying how amazing TLOU Online was going to be — still the best multiplayer game they’ve ever played. Never going to let what I work on not see the light of day again. Thank you all for your support and confidence!”

It was previously reported that The Last of Us Online was canceled due to Naughty Dog’s reluctance to maintain a live-service title over the long term, as well as its decision to focus on creating story-driven, single-player games. As we know, the studio is now developing their new IP—Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, announced at The Game Awards 2024—but it still doesn’t have a release date.

Speaking of The Last of Us game series, Naughty Dog is rumored to be working on a third installment in the franchise, which may focus on other immune survivors. Additionally, Joel’s voice actor, Troy Baker, recently hinted that we might see the character again in the near future, despite what happened to him in The Last of Us: Part II.
