Cloud Imperium Games has opened Star Citizen to free-to-play access through May 27, tying the trial to its annual DefenseCon event and arriving as crowdfunding closes in on $1 billion. The space sim sits at roughly $927.5 million on its public funding tracker, a figure that crossed $800 million eight months ago. A previous report placed the billion-dollar threshold in mid to late 2026.

The trial runs alongside the DefenseCon 2956 schedule at the Bevic Convention Center in the in-game city of Area18. Anyone making an account gets a loaner Aurora Mark 2 to fly to the convention, or they can spawn at Area18 and ride a shuttle to the venue. Cloud Imperium has put roughly 100 ships on the floor, each available to borrow for 48 hours at a stretch. The headliners are vessels normally locked behind hundreds of dollars of pledge tiers, which is the actual draw for anyone curious about the alpha without the buy-in.

The free window arrives a week after patch 4.8 dropped, the update that triggered a full wipe of the persistent universe. Cloud Imperium reset bank balances, in-game resources, and any vehicle bought with earned credits. Player blueprints and any ship purchased with real money stayed intact. The studio cited duplication exploits that had been flooding markets with copied goods, distorting prices, and letting players buy expensive ships without the grind.

I play this alpha in stretches and the wipe matters more for new accounts than for veterans. The studio said additional safeguards against exploits would ship with 4.8, though it did not specify what those safeguards are, and the patch notes do not call any out by name. Players were still reporting active duping after the patch went live.

Alpha 4.8 also added the Tactical Strike Group mission, an endgame assault on a fortified asteroid built for large organised squads and run both in space and on foot. Refuelling missions got an overhaul, two new infantry weapons went in, and flight suits now factor into G-force tolerance. The bulk of that content is gated by squad size or skill, so a 48-hour trial pilot is unlikely to clear the Tactical Strike Group run, but the new refuelling work is reachable.

Funding history runs parallel to the development timeline. Star Citizen has been in active development since 2012, growing into two connected products: the persistent universe and the standalone single-player campaign Squadron 42. Squadron 42 was previously targeted for 2025. Content director Jake Huckaby addressed the slip last October, when the project skipped a CitizenCon Direct showing.

"We drew a line in the sand when we said 2025. I don't know if we're going to make it, I just know that we're going to do every single thing possible to make it. And part of that is not taking time for the distraction of CitizenCon."

— Jake Huckaby

Squadron 42 is still nominally scheduled for a 2026 release, though Cloud Imperium has already publicly hedged on that window. The persistent universe itself sits further out, with 1.0 unlikely before 2028 on current pacing. I think the trial is timed precisely for this stretch. A reset economy, a fresh patch, and a funding total about to tick past a billion make a clean window for the studio to put new accounts into the launcher.

Anyone wanting in needs to create a Roberts Space Industries account and download the launcher. The DefenseCon floor opens at Bevic Convention Center, the borrowable ships rotate through 48-hour windows, and the offer closes May 27.
