More than half of 2026 has already passed, and many gamers as well as gaming media are ready to draw some conclusions about the best games of this year’s first half. The reputable magazine Empire is no exception; it has released the list of the top 10 video games of 2026 so far—and the number one spot is unlikely to surprise anyone.

According to Empire, the best game of 2026 is Resident Evil Requiem, developed by Capcom. The franchise's ninth installment became a massive success for the studio and the best-selling game in the entire series. It holds a Metacritic score of 89, surpassed only by the Resident Evil 4 remake (93) and Resident Evil 2 remake (91). Empire described the game as "a masterful return to form for the series and the best game of the year so far." The second place went to the PlayStation 5 exclusive Saros from Housemarque, while Forza Horizon 6, one of the two highest-rated games of the year on Metacritic, rounded out the top three. According to the magazine, Capcom is having an outstanding year with the releases of Resident Evil Requiem, PRAGMATA, and Monster Hunter Stories 3, while Onimusha is still set to arrive later this year.

Empire described Resident Evil Requiem as "a masterful return to form for the series, and the best game of the year so far."

Interestingly, Crimson Desert—the game from Pearl Abyss that was named "Game of the Year" this spring by the Legion Looterana portal—is absent from Empire's top list. Instead, it includes Mixtape, a title whose ratings players believe were overrated by gaming media despite the lack of genuine gameplay. Nevertheless, this ranking is likely to change by the end of the year, as several major releases are on the horizon with strong potential to claim the "Game of the Year" title—such as Control Resonant, Marvel’s Wolverine, and, of course, Grand Theft Auto VI.

Additionally, several games from Empire's ranking have also recently appeared on the list of top-selling projects of 2026. Resident Evil Requiem took first place, 007 First Light came in third, Forza Horizon 6 was fifth, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight ranked sixth, and Pokémon: Pokopia placed eighth.

Capcom is also developing a story DLC for Resident Evil Requiem, scheduled for release in 2027. It is expected to be a massive one and, according to rumors, will feature characters such as Leon S. Kennedy, Alyssa Ashcroft, Claire Redfield, and Ada Wong. However, the developers have yet to release any official details about it, so all rumors should be considered with a grain of salt.
