Following Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a presentation that premiered on Netflix this week, GTA 6 has seen another wave of popularity, accompanied by a steady stream of news, new details being revealed, and widespread discussion among players. And this comes as no surprise, since Rockstar finally showed gameplay from the most anticipated game of the year and shared more about its various aspects, including how long it has been in development.

Various gaming outlets have also had the opportunity to share their impressions of GTA 6, as Rockstar granted this privilege to a select few. One such was the TroisCouleurs, which recently released an interview with Rob Nelson, Head of Development at Rockstar Games. During the conversation, Nelson revealed that developing GTA 6 was no easy task, as the studio’s main team was working on Red Dead Redemption 2 at the time. In 2015, the game was still in the concept phase and was being handled by only a small team of specialists. Three years later, following the release of RDR 2, more and more people became involved in the project, and it wasn’t until 2020 that the entire studio devoted itself entirely to making the sixth installment. You can check out more details from Rob Nelson regarding the development of GTA 6 below:

“The game’s been in development since 2015, so the idea is gestating for a long time. The majority of the team really started rolling on to it after Red Dead Redemption 2 released in 2018. We have to be very careful about what ideas we choose to put in there, because it can take a long time to figure out what our angle is on this. Because by the time we write it and cast it and shoot it, and implement it, whatever it is – it could be gone, it could change, it could be dated. And so we’re always trying to think about whether something will stand the test of time. And so, you look at those things, and we only try to pick things if they work with the story we’re trying to tell, in the world we’re trying to tell it in. I think there will always be things to satirise, there are always ridiculous situations and behaviours that we can find, but we just have to be careful about what we pick.”

Also, during an interview with IGN, Nelson confirmed that at one point during the development of GTA 6, the game had four protagonists, but Rockstar decided to reduce the number of playable characters to two in order to devote more time to fully developing them. Furthermore, more and more details have emerged regarding the game’s plot, the dynamics of Jason and Lucia’s relationship, the size of the open world, and so on. In a separate interview, Rob Nelson confirmed that GTA 6 will run at 30 FPS at launch —including on the PlayStation 5 Pro.

For now, you can also find out everything we know about GTA 6 so far—the story, gameplay, map, open world, platforms, and more - as well as how GTA 6 is reshaping the 2026 game calendar and everything about GTA 6 pre-order details: price, bonuses, exact time, and Ultimate Edition.
