Like its predecessor, GTA 6 will feature several playable characters between whom you can switch to explore the world, complete main and side missions, and participate in various mini-games and other activities. However, as Rockstar explained, you won’t be able to switch between Jason and Lucia at absolutely any time in the game.

Rockstar North's co-studio head and head of development, Rob Nelson, recently spoke with Famitsu, where he revealed more details about the mechanics of switching between Jason and Lucia in GTA 6. According to him, this feature will not be completely unrestricted; the studio intends to limit the ability to switch in certain situations in order to better unfold the story from the perspective of one character or the other. "During the story, there are times where you can't switch from one character for some reason. There are some missions where you are free to switch as much as you want, but there are some sections where we want you to experience it from a certain character's perspective, like GTA 5, so we limit switching.

There is a mission that takes place in a high-rise apartment complex where you used to be able to switch freely between characters. However, as ex-special forces, we thought it would be a more natural fit for Jason to be in control, so we decided to set the character. The mission is early in the game, so we thought it would be unnatural for Lucia to lead and give instructions as the two navigate the area.

There are some operations where you're forced to switch characters. In the trailer, we showed a mission where they left a bank robbery and drove away in a car. At first you control Jason firing at the police vehicles from inside the car, while Lucia is driving. Then, during the mission you switch characters, and this time the player is driving the car as Lucia, while Jason and Raul continue to fire at the cops from the back seat.

There are missions that are designed in this way, then, like the mission at the end of the trailer where they are under attack, there are times when you can freely alternate switching between Jason and Lucia.”

Most likely, the limitations on switching between Jason and Lucia in GTA 6 primarily apply to story missions involving both characters, while exploring the open world will allow you to switch at any time. Rockstar has also confirmed that you can explore the world of GTA 6 either alone or with a partner—and in the latter case, the relationship between the characters will grow stronger, increasing the likelihood of a romance, though this is not a mandatory feature.

It’s also worth remembering that there were limitations on switching between characters in GTA 5. For instance, when Trevor is first introduced, we can’t play as Michael or Franklin—not only because a new character has entered the story, but also because the other two are in hiding after the heist. The same goes for Michael, who becomes temporarily unavailable when he’s kidnapped by the Chinese mafia.
