The upcoming Insomniac Games project, Marvel's Wolverine, is arguably the studio's most critical title regarding the future of their Marvel-based video game series. Recent analysis suggests that if the game fails financially, plans for future franchise development could be scrapped and upcoming releases cancelled.

This information, along with other details, was shared by Indian investor and entrepreneur Anish Moonka via his X account. Referencing previous Insomniac Games leaks, he noted that Marvel's Wolverine is expected to reach 6 million units sold to satisfy Sony's internal targets. Should the title fail to meet this threshold, the studio may be forced to abandon its roadmap for the Marvel-based franchise, which includes plans for three X-Men titles slated for release by 2035. Sony paid $229 million for Insomniac Games in 2019. The Wolverine game Insomniac is teasing on June 2 cost $305 million to make. A single game now costs more than the entire studio behind it.

We only know that budget because Insomniac was hacked. In December 2023, attackers broke into the studio's servers and dumped over 1.3 million internal files online. They got full access in under 25 minutes. Sony refused to pay the $2 million ransom, so a decade of plans ended up on the open internet.

The leaked contract between Sony and Marvel commits Insomniac to three X-Men games by 2035, with total spending of up to $621 million. Each game gets $120 million to build and $30 million to market. There's also a kill switch baked into the deal. If Wolverine sells fewer than 6 million copies in its first year, Marvel or Sony can cancel the whole trilogy.

Spider-Man 2, Insomniac's last big release, cost about $300 million to make and needed to sell 7.2 million full-price copies just to break even. As of late 2023, it had sold 6.1 million. An internal memo from the same leak warned that future big-budget games need to stay under $350 million, or the studio starts losing money on every game it ships.

The original Wolverine release date was September 1, 2025. It now ships September 15, 2026, more than a year late. In 2024, creative director Brian Horton left for Xbox after years running Insomniac's Marvel games. Game director Cameron Christian was reassigned. Marcus Smith and Mike Daly, two veteran Insomniac directors, took over the team.

On June 2, Sony will livestream the first real look at Wolverine in over four years. Grand Theft Auto 6 was just pushed to November 19, leaving Wolverine the only major game launch of the 2026 holiday season. But the game still has to sell 6 million copies by September 2027, or the next two X-Men games never get made.

Marvel's Wolverine is one of the most anticipated games of the year, and given that it launches in September—a month featuring titles like The Blood of Dawnwalker and Phantom Blade Zero—it may face stiff competition. As noted by Anish Moonka, the game will be showcased during the next State of Play on June 2nd, and the developers would do well to demonstrate something that further piques player interest in Marvel's Wolverine.

It is reported that, in addition to Marvel's Wolverine, Insomniac Games is actively working on a Marvel's Venom spin-off and the third installment of Marvel's Spider-Man. Although neither title has been officially announced yet, the Venom game is expected to launch next year, while the third Spider-Man entry is projected for 2028 or even 2029.
