Hello Games launched No Man's Sky update 6.4, The Swarm, on May 27, 2026. The eight-week event sends Travellers against the Hive of Glass, a massive alien starship sighted lurking just outside planetary atmospheres and obliterating any pilot who flies too close. The campaign frames the threat as a breach from the World of Glass, the archival afterlife linked to the game's simulation lore, and players have to coordinate across the community to push the invasion back into that other realm.

The Swarm Update runs as Expedition Twenty-Two and lasts approximately eight weeks. On entry, players answer a personality test that sorts them into one of three factions, each representing a fragment of the Traveller soul — the royal, the sage, and the weaver. Every team gets a ship and uniform in its assigned colours, and all three have to cooperate to construct the Prismatic Core in the Space Anomaly, a device that Specialist Polo is developing to weaken the invasion. Progress shows up in the Mission Log and on the Galactic Atlas website. Construction draws on three mission categories — Purge, Restoration, and Sabotage — and each category shifts the rate and balance of the build differently. The most valuable team will be glorified in the Space Anomaly for all time.

This release follows the previous update in February 2026, Remnant, which slotted a gravity gun called the Gravitino Coil into the multi-tool and rolled out heavy customisation for the Colossus exocraft, including spider-walker legs, treads, superelastic wheels, a flatbed module, and a furnace module for waste disposal on the move. Remnant also added Waste Processing Plants, Volatile Waste hazards, and a community expedition centred on cleaning up wreck-strewn planets with the Heirloom armour as its prize. Swarm sits in a different lane — combat-driven rather than salvage-driven — but extends the same cadence of large free updates that Hello Games has held since the game's 2016 launch.

The fight breaks into two arenas. In space, swarmer ships arrive in droves, fast-flying and fast-shooting, and players will need to dogfight them with their preferred ship weapons. The Hive itself is the centerpiece engagement: pilots have to thread a deadly wheel of lasers to reach a vulnerable core, and the boss can open its iris to fire a beam capable of destroying freighter fleets and, Hello Games teases, possibly even a space station. Down on the surface, crashed swarmer ships now appear on dissonant planets in all game modes, and buried debris from those crashes turns up on worlds that are both dissonant and contain salvageable scrap. Crash sites are guarded by small but deadly planetary swarmers that are fiercer than their size suggests. Dismantling fallen swarmers exposes the corrupted ichor running through their circuits, which feeds the war effort's intelligence gathering. I think the Hive's invasion premise lands well because it pulls the older simulation lore into something players actually have to push against in real time rather than just read about.

Teams can also dispatch dedicated sweepers to cleanse contaminated worlds where swarmer debris is leaking corruption into ecosystems. Sabotage missions deploy from the Space Anomaly to intercept and disrupt the swarm network directly, while Restoration covers the cleanup work on the ground. The structure means a player can contribute through whichever loop suits them — air combat, planetary patrols, or logistics — and still feed the same Prismatic Core construction bar.

Rewards are tied to participation rather than faction outcome. The Direwasp Disintegrator is a rifle multi-tool fabricated from swarmer alloys, calibrated to let the user eliminate large numbers of hostiles without fatigue. The Direwasp Flightpack is the new jetpack, described as humming and oscillating as though buzzing with the rage of a thousand metal insects. The six-piece Direwasp customisation set covers a chestpiece and plating, boots, gloves, cuisses and a helm, all forged from salvaged swarmer alloys. Team-themed posters, decals, titles, and faction flags round out the haul, with the flag set exclusive to whichever fragment a player was assigned.

No Man's Sky Update 6.4 Sends Travellers to War Against the Hive of Glass 1

The update also clears a long list of bugs and performance issues. A rare softlock that left the Connecting banner displaying indefinitely on the initial frontend screens is fixed, along with a crash tied to rendering thumbnails for multiple complex corvette-class starships. Hello Games implemented memory and performance optimisations for ship trails and speedlines, improved performance when piloting wheeled Exocraft on Switch, Xbox One, and PS4, and applied a significant optimisation to freighter battles. Lighting calculations on the CPU run better, object visibility in complex scenes is faster, and PS4 Pro gets reduced memory use when rendering UI in sub-4K resolutions plus a fix for a 4K crash.

Space combat itself got a tuning pass on top of the new content. Targeted enemy ships are more visible in third-person combat, weapon aiming is tighter, and auto-follow navigation can now boost the ship. Enemy ships fly with improved patterns. Hits on weak points always crit, and hits elsewhere on those enemies never crit, which removes some of the prior ambiguity in damage rolls. A notification bug that delayed updates until a destroyed ship finished its death spin is resolved, and the countdown for the pulse engine re-enabling after combat no longer displays negative time or the wrong technology name.

Quality-of-life work covers a wide spread. Teleporter endpoints from previous galaxies will no longer be removed when a player progresses to the next galaxy through the galactic core, and endpoints can now be added in galaxies outside the player's home galaxy. The In Stellar Multitudes mission no longer misdirects players to the galaxy map when their first purple star system sits in a different galaxy. Corvettes can land in the Space Station and the Anomaly again, and the analysis visor displays specific module names on the HUD when viewing a corvette. Arena League Challenger's Invitations are now more likely to push battles across multiple planets before offering a Champion's Invitation, and more likely to pick Holo-Arenas the player has not previously visited. Champion's Invitations work correctly in Outlaw systems. Companion experience awards are better balanced when fighting much higher-level opponents. Retroviral pellets can no longer be duplicated.

Swarm is the third update of 2026, following Remnant in February and the Pokemon-inspired Xeno Arena in April. If Hello Games keeps the three-month cadence, the next drop lands in August, which is when No Man's Sky turns ten. The studio's other project, the procedurally generated planet sim Light No Fire, is still in development, and Summer Games Fest next month would be a reasonable venue for an update on it.

Full patch notes from Hello Games:

The Swarm Expedition

  • Expedition Twenty-Two, The Swarm, will begin shortly and run for approximately eight weeks.
  • Players on the expedition will be assigned into one of three teams of Travellers, and allocated a ship and uniform in their team colours.
  • All teams must work together to unlock the final battle. Progress is represented by the construction of the Prismatic Core in the Space Anomaly, as well as displayed in the Mission Log and on the Galactic Atlas website.
  • Construction of the Prismatic Core is driven by completing three categories of missions to counteract the Swarm — Purge, Restoration, and Sabotage. Each category has a different impact on the rate and balance of construction.
  • The most valuable team will be glorified in the Space Anomaly for all time.
  • Rewards include new posters, decals and titles; flags representing your assigned soul fragment; the Direwasp rifle Multi-Tool; the Direwasp Flightpack; and the six-piece Direwasp customisation set.

Swarmer Enemies

  • During the expedition, players will encounter two new enemy types: small, agile swarmer ships, and the huge, formidable Hive of Glass boss.
  • In all game modes, crashed swarmer ships can now be found on dissonant planets. Crash sites are defended by small but deadly planetary swarmers.
  • Buried debris from crashed swarmer ships can now be found on worlds which are both dissonant and contain salvageable scrap.
