Some fans still seem disappointed that Naughty Dog canceled the multiplayer spin-off called Factions, also known as The Last of Us Online. However, this disappointment inspired them to create their own versions of the game, one of which is a multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II.

A YouTube user named Speclizer has posted a 25-minute gameplay video of a multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II, which has been in development since January this year and is expected to be available to everyone by September. It's important to note that this feature will only be accessible to PC users—PlayStation consoles will not support it. In the video below, you can watch early gameplay footage of the mod on a custom map as well as on the Houses map. Judging by the comments, most players are impressed with how the mod developers have managed to recreate the atmosphere of the original game, making it both engaging and surprisingly stable, even though many elements still require further refinement.

By the way, this isn't the only game similar to The Last of Us Factions that players have learned about in recent months. In March of this year, the studio Albatross Interactive unveiled a spiritual successor titled Terminal War, which is expected to launch in Steam Early Access later this year. Earlier this month, the developers released the official game trailer.

As for The Last of Us Factions, Naughty Dog cancelled the project in 2023 after seven years of development. Game director Vinit Agarwal revealed that he learned about the cancellation—despite the game being 80% complete—just 24 hours before its official announcement. According to him, it was the best multiplayer game he had ever played.
