A lot of fans were disappointed that Naughty Dog canceled The Last of Us Factions back in 2023—a multiplayer project set in the game universe. But, as was recently revealed, fans are developing an unofficial multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part II—ironically, this feature will only be available to PC users.

Last month, a user named Speclizer posted a 25-minute gameplay video of The Last of Us Part II’s multiplayer mode on PC, which, despite obvious technical flaws, still looked impressive. Since then, he has continued working on the project, and on X social media, the modder revealed that the game now supports 4v4 mode, while until recently only 1v1 and 2v2 modes were available. Today we hit quite a big milestone in the development of the TLOU 2 Multiplayer mod, we can now have matches up to 4v4, previously we were limited to 1v1s only. Here's some highlights from a few of our 2v2 matches!

Previously, Speclizer confirmed that the multiplayer mod already supports a matchmaking system, leaderboards, and even an interface inspired by the canceled The Last of Us Factions. The project is scheduled for release this September—but there is still a lot of work to be done.

It’s also worth pointing out that this mod isn’t the only replacement for The Last of Us Factions. This March, Albatross Interactive announced Terminal War —which the studio directly called a replacement for the canceled The Last of Us Factions. The game is still in the early stages of development, but it was recently shown how they’re working on the game’s visuals —and the similarities to The Last of Us are clearly evident.

As for The Last of Us Factions specifically, this year it was confirmed that the game was canceled 24 hours before its official announcement, which broke the heart of its game director, Vinit Agarwal. In an interview, he stated that it was “the best multiplayer game” he and his colleagues had ever played.

Naughty Dog is currently working on its new IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which is rumored to release next year exclusively on PlayStation 5.
