Over the past week, quite a few rumors have surfaced about Injustice 3—the new installment in the series from NetherRealm Studios. The speculation went so far that the studio’s creative director, Ed Boon, responded to it himself, somewhat disappointing fans with his comments. However, there are some wrinkles to the story.

It all started with a rumor on X that NetheRealm Studios is allegedly collaborating with Insomniac Games (Marvel's Wolverine) to develop the first-ever AAAA fighting game. Boon responded by writing, “100% false. Next rumor, please...” Users decided to respond to the creative director by asking him about the recent Injustice 3 playtests (as well as Mortal Kombat 12 and Mortal Kombat 9), to which he again replied it's all false information. In response to one user's suggestion that the studio is working on Mortal Kombat vs. DC 2, Boon replied as follows:

OMG. It's MK vs DCU 2!

Appreciate the interest & enthusiasm.

But just because a game isn’t currently being tested externally doesn’t necessarily mean the game isn’t in development.

The last sentence caught fans' attention: Ed Boon appears to have hinted the studio might be working on Injustice 3, although he denies that unannounced fighting game tests were recently held. The possibility also remains that NetherRealm’s new game based on DC Comics might have a different title; this was hinted at some time ago by an insider, MultiverSusie.

Nevertheless, as previously noted, there has been a flurry of rumors about Injustice 3 over the past week. Initially, an image of the Flash’s mask appeared on Reddit, posted by someone who had helped develop an unannounced fighting game for NetherRealm, and just a few days ago, a leak from employees confirmed Supergirl and Batwoman will appear in the game. In any case, it’s believed that Injustice 3 is in an advanced stage of development, and it’s possible the game could even be announced this year—for instance, at The Game Awards in December.
