Riot Games has been ordered by a Brazilian court to pay 15 million Brazilian reais (approximately $2.9 million) in collective moral damages following a legal dispute involving loot box mechanics in League of Legends.

According toSheep Esports, citing a report from Metrópoles, the ruling is part of a public civil lawsuit filed by Brazil’s National Association of Child and Adolescent Protection Centers. The organization argued that loot boxes raise concerns regarding the protection of minors and their exposure to gambling-like systems in video games.

The court ultimately ruled against Riot Games, imposing a financial penalty of 15 million reais. The funds will not be paid directly to individuals but will instead be allocated to the Federal District Fund for the Protection of Children’s and Adolescents’ Rights, which finances programs and initiatives aimed at safeguarding the welfare of young people in Brazil.

The decision marks another significant legal challenge for the gaming industry as regulators and advocacy groups around the world continue to scrutinize loot box systems and their potential impact on younger audiences.
