After numerous rumors, CD Projekt RED officially announced the new DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the 2015 game. The new expansion called Songs of the Past will return Geralt of Rivia as the main character and will be released in 2027.

The development of the expansion is officially handled by the studio Fool's Theory - the same developers responsible for the remake of The Witcher, announced in 2022. Any plot and gameplay details about Songs of the Past are currently unknown, but some of the CD Projekt RED employees, as revealed by GRYOnline, shared their emotions about the announcement and confirmed that the expansion will introduce new characters and storylines. For instance, Sebastian Kalemba, Game Director at CD Projekt RED, reveals that Songs of the Past is the story that is really closed to him, as you can check out his quote below:

“What can I say… this is one of those stories I personally keep very close to my heart and I genuinely can’t wait for you to experience it.

The teams on both sides have been pouring an incredible amount of passion into it and I’m really excited for you to return to the Path with Geralt once more.”

Also, Philipp Weber, who worked as a quest designer of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 and who now holds the position of narrative director of The Witcher 4, shared his thoughts.

“Many of you guessed it already: we wanted to get back to the Witcher 3 one more time! The story of Songs of the Past is close to me heart, and I hope you will love it as well.

Our friends at Fool’s Studio have some true Witcher veterans, so rest assured it's going to be great!”

Michal Nowakowski, who is the Member of the Board at CD Projekt RED, described Songs of the Past as “a story where good old Geralt from The Witcher 3 is coming back on the trail one more time” and promised to reveal more information when the time comes.

In turn, Marcin Łukaszewski, Community and Social Media Manager, revealed that Songs of the Past will be a full expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, not just a DLC, and hinted that it will include new stories, characters, and offer several hours of gameplay.

"Could you elaborate the difference between DLC and expansion?"

"Sure thing! For us at CDPR, DLCs are small pieces of content we release for free — like the additional outfits for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Expansions, on the other hand, are major pieces of content providing lots of hours of gameplay, including new story, characters, etc."

It was originally planned that CD Projekt RED would present the DLC Songs of the Past on the upcoming stream dedicated to the birthday of The Blood and Wine, but the title was prematurely surfaced, after which the official announcement took place.
