Yesterday's announcement of the new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt certainly pleased all fans of the franchise. The new DLC called Songs of the Past will once again return Geralt of Rivia as the main character and is expected to be released in 2027.

CD Projekt RED, for now, has not shared any plot details of the expansion but promises to do so when the time comes. Songs of the Past only has concept art, but thanks to it, fans have already begun to build their own theories and notice interesting details.

The first detail that did not immediately catch the eye is that on the cover of Songs of the Past, Geralt has three swords instead of the usual two. This also sparked rumors that the events of the expansion might simply be a dream.

What if...what if this is all just a dream? And he has three swords as well

Then, another fan discovered that Geralt's weapon, used in the concept art, closely resembles the silver sword Gesheft from the quest "Beyond Hill and Dale..." in the expansion The Blood and Wine. In fact, there are two variants of this sword, and the user who noticed this detail is speculating that it may be related to the events of Songs of the Past.

So the sword on this artwork is very very similar to the silver sword "Gesheft" from the "Beyond Hill and Dale..." quest in Blood and Wine.

There are actually two variants of this sword, and the Songs of the Past sword combines them both (notice the shape of the blade).

I'm wondering what meaning it could have... Clearly it must be something that's important to the whole new story. Is it related to Blood and Wine?...

And finally, there is another point that may be important for the plot of The Witcher 4, namely the fact that Geralt's sword sheath resembles the one Ciri carries in the trailer for the fourth part, and fans have already come up with a theory that Geralt will pass this sword to Ciri at the end of the expansion, laying the foundation for the new installment. Previously, there were rumors online that laying the foundation for The Witcher 4 is the main purpose of the new expansion, and such a passing of the torch really makes sense.

The scabbard of Geralt's sword looks very similar to Ciri's in The Witcher 4.

Be that as it may, this is all just speculation and theories at the moment, and the plot of Songs of the Past is currently a mystery for fans. The developers have also teased that it will be a full-fledged expansion, introducing new characters and including new storylines. Perhaps we will learn more details today during a special CD Projekt RED stream dedicated to the anniversary of The Blood and Wine —where the announcement of the new DLC was originally supposed to take place.
